Its source is filtered by mountain rocks and it’s above the treeline, so it misses out on most runoff.  Via The Guardian Rotomairewhenua (original Maori name) has been reported to have a clarity of roughly 75 meters, which means you can see through 75 meters (250 feet,) distilled water has a clarity of roughly 80 meters. This is 12 meters deeper than the 63 meters of the next clearest lake in the world, Te Waikoropupu Springs, which also happens to be in New Zealand.
